Gary and Debbie
Bringing out — and blending in with — the natural landscape.
- Date: 2018
- Project Type: Residential Building
About this Project
Although homes like Gary and Debbie’s—luxury residences in planned communities—often present challenges thanks to strict building requirements, this project enabled us to flex our creative muscles and build a home that looked like it grew right out of the land.
Sometimes community restrictions around building height, envelope, materials, and colors can feel a bit prohibitive, but in this case, we turned those restrictions into an asset.
We looked at how we could create a home that fit the terrain of the land, took advantage of the sun’s arc, met the needs of the clients, and looked organic, like it belonged amongst the surrounding vegetation and landscape.

Instead of looking like a synthetic object placed atop the ground, Gary and Debbie’s home looks like a beautiful part of the natural scenery.
We designed the home to flow over and around rock outcroppings and features, and even before we broke ground we selected and set aside certain rocks for strategic post-construction placement. The home design incorporates outdoor seating areas under cover of trees.
Creating a home that fits into specific parameters while also standing out in terms of unique design is an art—and it’s fun.
